Description:
The East African Community (EAC) is a regional intergovernmental organization bringing together eight (8) Partner States, namely: the Republic of Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Kenya, the Republic of Rwanda, the Federal Republic of Somalia, the Republic of South Sudan, the United Republic of Tanzania, and the Republic of Uganda, with its headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania. The vision of the EAC is “to attain a prosperous, competitive, secure, stable and politically united East Africa--. Its mission is “to widen and deepen economic, political, social and cultural integration in order to improve the quality of life of the people of East Africa through increased competitiveness, value added production, trade and investments”. The EAC Treaty of 1999, Chapter 18, Article 105 - 110 provides for “harmonizing food supply, nutrition and food security policies and strategies” relating to stimulating agricultural development, eliminating hunger, eradicating poverty, and ensuring food security.
